According to the American College of Allergies, “50% of all illness is aggravated or caused by polluted indoor air.” Furthermore, the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) itself declared that “most people spend well over 90% of their time indoors.” Poor indoor air quality can cause infections, lung cancer, and chronic lung diseases such as asthma. However, there are devices, such as air filters, that can prevent these pollutants to damage our health. As such, to reduce the allergens in my house I decided to carry out my project in 2 phases. First, I tested 4 different brands of air filters to see their effectiveness to remove the pollutants in my house. The filters I tested were Honeywell, Rheem, EZ flow green and Filtrete. After testing each filter for 3 weeks, I found out the Honeywell brand was the most effective in reducing the particulate matter, whereas in the other 3 brands, the difference was virtually negligible. As part of my second phase, I designed my own inexpensive personal air filter system which could be used for small office spaces or rooms to reduce particulate matter. My personal air filter system was able to reduce the air particulate matter when tested for 8 hrs. Hence, I found out that we do not need to buy high-end air purifiers to reduce the allergens; instead a small inexpensive air filter system can do the same job, reducing allergens for a cleaner air quality.
Science is my favorite subject. On this tab I will show you the various wonders of science.
